Filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, the director of successful Bollywood hit movie Drishyam, took his last breath on Monday, August 17th, 2020, in the evening, as per Hyderabad’s hospital sources. 

The director was suffering from liver cirrhosis and secondary infections and was admitted to Hyderabad’s AIG hospital in Gachibowli on July 31st. 

According to the hospital’s statement, on July 31st Nishikant Kamat came with a complaint of fever and excessive fatigue and was admitted to the hospital on the same day. It was diagnosed that the Drishyam director was suffering from liver cirrhosis for the past two years. 

Initially, doctors kept him on antibiotics and supportive medications, he showed improvement also, but very soon, his health started deteriorating with liver dysfunction and drowsiness. The next day, on Sunday, he developed respiratory failure and hypotension, which worsened his health, and then on Monday evening, he passed away due to multiple organ failures.

Hours before his death, fake news spread in the media and was doing rounds that he had passed away. Nishikant’s friend director Milap Zaveri, by rejecting the false news he said, ‘He is not dead, he is on the ventilator, but his condition is very critical.’ 

Actor Ritesh Deshmukh, also came forward and denied the news and wrote on his twitter account, ‘Nishikant Kamat is on ventilator support. He is still alive & fighting. Let’s pray for him’.

But now it is true that the 50-year-old Drishyam director Nishikant Kamat is no longer with us, and he left the world too soon.   After his demise, many Bollywood actors took to twitter to share their sincere condolences. 

Actor Ajay Devgn who worked with the director in one of his blockbuster movies Drishyam (2015), mourned his demise, tweeted, ‘My equation with Nishikant was not just about Drishyam, a film which he directed with Tabu and me. It was an association that I cherished. He was bright, ever-smiling. He has gone too soon. RIP Nishikant’

Condoling his death, actor Ritesh Deshmukhhe shared a picture with Nishikant Kamat, in which they were hugging each other and tweeted, ‘I will miss you, my friend, Rest In Peace.’ 

Nimrat Kaur, the Airlift actress, also mourned his death and wrote, ‘Really sorry to learn of the untimely passing away of Nishikant Kamat. Heartfelt condolences and prayer for all his loved ones.’

Other actors like actor R Madhavan and actor Randeep Hooda also shared his grief over filmmaker Nishikanat’s death. Randeep Hooda wrote, ‘Farewell Nishi!!! You lived and died by what you decided you loved more than anything else. I’m sure you had no regrets about much. Thank you for all the movies, all the fun stories, warmth, and smiles.’

Filmmaker Nishikant Kamat was a great director; he not only directed Bollywood movies but also directed Marathi films. His debut as a director was in 2005 with the Marathi movie Dombivali Fast. He earned so many awards and recognition for his Marathi films such as Dombivali Fast and Lal Bhaari.

His Marathi film Dombivali Fast became one of the biggest hits of the year 2006 in the Marathi Cinema Industry, and the movie also won National Film Award Best Feature film in Marathi.

He made his Bollywood debut with the movie Mumbai Meri Jaan, starring Irfaan Khan. His other-directed movies are Madaari, Force, Rocky Handsome, Drishyam. 

Drishyam was Kamat’s biggest Bollywood hit, which starred Ajay Devgn and Tabu in the lead roles. He received accolades and spotlights for this movie.

Apart from directing, Nishikant also acted in some films. Usually, he appeared in villainous roles. He first acted in Saatchya Aat Gharat. He also acted in Hava Aney Dey and played a negative role in his own directed movie Rocky-handsome (2016), which starred John Abraham and Genelia D’Souza in lead roles.
